AIや自動化が急速に進む中、会社の成長のために求められている人材とは？という問いに関するマッキンゼー社の調査（原文『スキルシフト：オートメーションと労働者の未来』）があります。10年後に最も需要が高くなるであろうスキルのトップは、複雑なデータ解析やプログラミングなどの高度な技術力とされています（55%増）。ここで興味深いのは、対人スキルや感情的なスキルに対する需要も、25%増加する見込みであるというデータです。機械にできない仕事を行うための「ソフトスキル」の必要性が再認識されているのです。では、どの様にこの「ソフトスキル」を習得していくことができるのでしょうか？

As automation and artificial intelligence (AI) technology advances rapidly, the required skill sets will change in the future workforce. The McKinsey’s research "Skill shift: Automation and the future of the workforce" in US, UK, Germany, France, Italy and Spain provides a good overview of this topic. The research indicates that the highest demand in 2030 will be for advanced technological skills such as comprehensive data analytics and programming skills – in total a 55% increase in demand. The interesting results here are the increased demand in soft skills such as social and emotional skills, which machines have quite a long way from comprehending – a 25% increase. How can we acquire these so called “soft skills” then?

このソフトスキルは、知識や技術と同等のレベルで身につけられるものではありません。的確かつ丁寧なメールの文章を作成することができても、条件や状況は常に同じであるとは限りません。誰に対して、どの様なタイミングで、いかなる条件下で提示できるのか。英語習得も同様です。言語レベルでの英語力を身につけることは第一のステップですが、重要な次なるステップはそれらの有効な活用です。自身の考え、汲み取る感情、そしてそれらに基づく選択に大きく左右されます。鋭い状況把握、直感的な判断、そして遂行能力が、結果の優劣をつける重要な役割を担います。英語で仕事ができる人材と認識されている社員に、常に共通しているスキルではないでしょうか。

I do not think that soft skills are something that you can be taught in the same way as more traditional knowledge and techniques. You can be taught how to write an appropriate and polite email sentence, but conditions and context are not always the same – To whom? What timing? In which context? This is exactly the same as mastering English. Having linguistic skills is the first step, but the important next step is how to utilise these, which entirely depends on your own thoughts, feelings and choices. Acute awareness of the situation, intuitive decision making and execution/delivery skills, as a result, play a significant role. These skills are the ones we witness again and again in truly successful career people with a relatively high level of English competence.

今回の連載の随所で述べてきましたが、個々のさらなるキャリアアップを目指すために、環境を変え、自分自身に張り巡らした境界を越えてみる、というのも一つの選択肢です。私自身、海外留学で得たものは多大であるため、英語で仕事をしたい、英語で人生の幅を拡げたい、と本気で考えている方には、是非海外に出てみることをお勧めします。
